General Discussions / Editorial comments of shows

As a subscriber, I am looking for accurate descriptions of shows on at any given time.  For movies you'd expect a plot extract, for regular television shows a quick note on which episode it is.

IMHO the editorialisation of show description is neither welcome nor appropriate; particularly given the significant charge requested by ICE.

For example, channel nine's news:

"Strong advice... take the kids to the park and return for SBS World News or the ABC News at 7pm. Cos IceMan told me so ..."
Ok, so as a one off I see the humour.  Every night it's hardly entertaining and just ruins the information on my PVR.

Or a movie (eg Top Gun from last night)

"Then it's time to watch this slick 1980's blockbuster about a group of cocky fighter pilots. Maverick compares egos with Iceman, cracks onto his hot teacher, redeems the tarnished reputation of his dead father, watches his best friend Goose go down in flames and finally wins the day - all in the name of peace, democracy and the right to wear Ray-bans."

Guys, we are paying you for a guide data service not a poor attempt at stand-up comedy.  ~$150 for that kind of garbage is offensive.

If you want to charge a professional price, offer a professional product.

Can someone from Ice please comment as to their intention of continued editorialisation of this information?

XMLTV (General) / Empty SBS channels?
January 24, 2006, 08:02:26 PM
Hi guys,

I have been a subscriber to your guide data for quite some time and really do think its depth of information is great.  However I have noticed that SBS world news has no programme entries today and tomorrow and I can't find any entries at all for SBS and ABC HD channels for the next week.  All other channels are perfect and I haven't altered my channel configs for weeks.

Is this a common problem or do I need to start some heavy XML and SQL debugging?

TIA.

QuoteThe proposal is to provide HD guide channels by filtering out the events flagged as HD from our SD guide.  This guide will have gaps where there are no HD shows.  Does that sound OK to you?

This sounds perfect - thanks again for the speedy response.

QuoteGood idea - I will discuss it with our engineers today and let you know what we can do.

Thanks Peter.  Did you have any luck in your discussions?

Hi,

I have to say I am very impressed with the quality of guide data available within the Ice system - it's great to see someone stepping up to the mark on something we have all been crying out for.

Can anyone please explain why there is a limitation on having programming description on one channel per multiplex?  Perhaps my terminology is incorrect, but what I really want is to be able to have guide data for both the primary channel (say nine digital) and then have the same data applied to nine HD.  By restricting people being able to apply to more than one channel makes it **REALLY** difficult to intentionally record HD programming as it always needs to be a manual schedule - it almost negates the benefit of such rich guide data.

Is there any chance Ice can work around this limitation?

TIA.
