Title: Humax 4tune (HMS-1000T)
Post by: rockets on May 19, 2014, 04:10:12 PM
Humax have announced a 4 tuner model called 4tune. Looks like a fantastic device. Does this device support IceTV like other Humaxs? Will ice be carrying 4tune in the shop?

According to a Facebook post reply this device will be supporting IceTV confirmed by the user saying they had contacted IceTV. Can we get a forum confirmation please.  :)

Let's hope they have more codecs and it's better at being a media center. At that price it would wanna be. I'm not holding my breath based on their performance to date

Release date today, bit of a non event really! From their Facebook page they have released some to a few Harvey Norman stores in Victoria. Still no detailed specs, still no word if it will be IceTV compatible. Their website still says "launching soon". The replacement for my Toppy is looking more like the Beyonwiz T3!

Anyone pick up one of these? Would love to hear some feedback as there is limited info out there on features/UI/specs etc. I have one on order at HN in SA - they are saying 1-2 weeks  :(

I'm interested particularly in the UI/features for browsing NAS fileshares for watching video/movies

I just cannot understand all the secrecy behind this product. I certainly would not be ordering one yet until I can be satisfied that it is suitable.
To get any info out of Humax is like getting blood from a stone! I find it ridiculous, I think I will be awaiting until others have bought it and report back,
it could be a load of rubbish!

I was this person, when IceTv had the 4 year subscription sale on a couple of weeks, i know i was going to purchase the new Humax and asked IceTv if the new Humax was going to be Ice capable and said i would only get the subscription if it was, i was told point blank it would be 100% capable.

Humax was not answering the question but then i find out its not capable yet, NOT HAPPY, i rang Ice and wanted refund but they are working on Ice Capability now so i had my account suspended until its released so i am not wasting subscription time

I had a very short play with one of these and I was very impressed. Nice remote. Nice new features laid out logically in nice menus. The menus were similar to the current Humax style but still different enough to know you are using a different model.

Going by the Humax Australia website, the 4tune seems to support the 3 Humax smart phone apps, and has samba support - though it reads like you need to copy the files to the Humax HDD before it can play them (assuming it has codecs to support said files).

Humax PVRs have an unadvertised feature where you can set a different remote code for the remote control and PVR (with 6 codes to pick from) so you could have a 4tune, a 7500 and a 7510 all in the same room with each PVR's remote only controlling that PVR. Or setup a universal remote to operate all 3 PVRs independently.

One unconfirmed "feature" that I have heard about is that the 4tune cannot record more than 1 channel per tuner. So no recording ABC1 and ABC2 from 1 tuner, while recording 7, 9 and 10 from the other 3 tuners. I assume that you can record 4 channels and view a live sister channel of one of the 4 channels being recorded. This behaviour is the same as most PVRs, except the TMS toppies with recent firmware and the Beyonwiz T3 (which is still too new to comment on it's general reliability). I think Humax have done the right thing here as I would rather reliably record 4 channels at one time (as separate files each with padding) than unreliably try to record 5 or more shows (that are not all separate files) at one time.

If I was after a new family friendly PVR that can record any 4 channels at the same time I would jump on one of these... if IceTV support gets added. The other features, like well integrated VOD, Catchup TV, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter etc, plus the smart phone/tablet apps, just add to what should another solid PVR from Humax.

Edit: corrected some poor grammar

Can you confirm this the case, i will not be buying unless it can stream directly from my NAS

Supported formats are
• Video: MP4, VOB, AVI, ASF, MKV, MPEG-2TS
• Photo: JPEG, PNG, BMP, GIF
• Music: MP3

Are you seriously suggesting that ABC, 7, 9 and 10 would EVER all have shows worth recording AT THE SAME TIME???

I would reply " In your dreams"

I no longer have access to the one I briefly played with so I also want to know the answer to this. I wasn't aware that it supported samba when I played with a 4tune so it wasn't something that I tested.

It would be strange to have samba support and not be able to stream media direct from a network SMB share (without DLNA). I hope it can as it would make an excellent replacement for aging DP series Beyonwizes. Humax are touting the 4tune as a media center so maybe the description of the samba capability lost something in the translation.

I am inclined to agree with above. In the last few weeks I've been trying to gain specifics on this unit as on paper it looks good. BUT... I received an email from IceTV basically telling me that Humax has confirmed the HMS-1000t will NOT support IceTV... and after emailing Humax I was unable to gain confirmation whether they do or do not.

I also tried to obtain info from Humax on compatibility with Samsung Smart TV's and whether the smart TV can stream live or recorded television from the HMS-1000t, but again couldn't get an answer.

So... I am going to sit and watch until more info gets out into the market, because I am worried the unit won't live up to the hype.

It would be nice if IceTV publicly stated on here what is the progress with any talks with Humax and whether there is likely to be compatibility in the short or long term. I would have thought it would be in IceTV's interest, if people are going out and buying this unit and it will never be IceTV compatible, then they have lost that business. I personally will not buy it if there is no compatibility.

Agree with both comments above. I found it really odd that IceTV were sending me an email without being able to give a solid answer. My first reaction to the email was WTF??

In my opinion the current situation is bad for both Humax and IceTV... and they should sort it ASAP because I wont be buying anything until the situation is clear.

It does read like a paid product promo. The author seems to be referring to Freeview as in "Free To Air Digital TV Channels" and not the "Freeview EPG" certified PVRs, though he never makes that clear enough to prevent readers mistaking the 4tune for a "Freeview EPG" crippled PVR.

But, if your interested I give my HDR-7510T 8/10 and my HM-1000T (4Tune) 3/10.

Well, it's ok.
Just to me other than the 4 tuners it's a backwards step from my HDR-7510T.

I'll put something together.

From what I can see most of the problem should be able to be fix in firmware.

Bought one of these yesterday, for people interested in the EPG setup Humax has its own internet based EPG! At first sight it looks primitive but seems to work ok, lots of room for improvement.
I have upgraded from the 7500 and I was a little disappointed with 4tunes PQ compared to the 7500, colours seem to be washed out and it took some time fiddling with adjustments to get something that was acceptable to me.
Scheduled recording didn't work last night last night...I haven't found out why yet.
Tried the EPG search function and that didn't work properly- when I searched for "movie" only 1 result came up.
Also had a full system lock up while we were watching 7mate! The only way I could fix it was to switch the unit off and on again from the back.
I haven't tried dlna yet but will report back if people are interested
So for a $600 pvr my experience hasn't been good so far Humax need to lift their game a bit.
This is not meant a pick on session on Humax but purely my first few hrs experience with this unit.

My understanding is that Humax is paying IceTV to provide a portion of their EPG data for the Humax.

So once again Humax release an unfinished product. To be honest it seems as if most PVR manufacturers are guilty of this. The 7500T is not bad- but its 2 years old and still has bugs. Other manufacturers like TVIX and Strong are reknowned for buggy software.

PVR's just don't have the sales volume to attract major players - and get finished products. I wonder what the FetchTV box is like- ie is it also unfinished?

We've had PVRs from the "major" players in the past. They weren't that good and are probably the reason the specialist PVR manufacturers have survived - Topfield/Beyonwiz/Humax/Tivo etc were all better.
My theory for the 'buggyness' is the incessant desire to incorporate more multimedia functionality rather than just make a great PVR. A 'triumph' of marketing over engineering.

Very keen to know if the 7510 has DLNA so it can be read from a WD Live, plus "Smart" recording (e.g. recording a series) - so basically it is a reliable, 2 tuner version of the 4Tune, based on IceTV. If so I think I will get a 7510 based on this discussion!

Yes the desire to add non-PVR features rather than refine and perfect basic PVR features seems common. I use my PVRs to record and play back recordings. I have better DLNA payers (Samsung TV, Sony BlueRay, D-Link Boxee Box).

So these units are about $600 - that was the price Harvey Norman was selling the TF-T6000 when was released. Now that is a unit that is not much of a PVR and some of the advanced features are broken. (end of rant)
