Store Update Manager crash and IceGuide4MCE 1.5
« on: December 04, 2006, 10:09:39 AM »
Hi,

Just finished reading other posts on how the reg changes made in the ver1.5 install have been causing MCUpdate.exe to crash.  I've been getting the same issue at home on two separate Vista RTM pc's with the latest IceGuide installer applied.  Guide still get's updated but it is an irritation to get the crash every time the update runs.

Has anything concrete been discovered on how IceGuide can work without causing the Store Update Manager to crash every time an guide update is triggered?

Thanks!

Hi there,

Yeah, we've been reading the same posts actually, and trying to figure out the best solution.  It appears that the new registry key we added to IceGuide4MCE.exe 1.5 is causing the crash, so we'll have to take that out and find another solution.  At the moment the only idea we've seen that seems to work is to keep rewriting the server location key every once in a while.  Not a great way to do it, but maybe the only way right now.  That would mean installing another program that runs on a scheduled basis, or maybe adding it to the PIMP client, for those using it.  On the other hand, if the KeepKey program that people are talking about is working, maybe there's no need to create another program to do the same thing. (?)

At the very minimum, it looks like we need to go back to version 1.4.

To remove the registry key that's causing the crash, save the following lines to a file called "disable.reg" and then run it:

Code: [Select]
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Service\EPG]
"disableUpdateDiscSvc"=-

We're still looking into all the options and keeping an eye on what people are finding, and we'll let you know if we find a better solution.

You can find the KeepKey program here, although I of course have to include a standard disclaimer about this not being our program, we haven't tested it, if it melts your hard drive it's not our fault, blah blah blah:
