Title: IceTV Scheduled Maintenance tonight (22/10/2015)
Post by: Daniel Hall at IceTV on October 22, 2015, 05:54:28 PM
Tonight IceTV will be performing scheduled maintenance on it's servers between Midnight tonight (22/10/2015) and 6am tomorrow (23/10/2015). We will be moving them to new hardware which will also involve changes to our DNS setup.

What does this mean to me?

During the maintenance window the IceTV service will be unavailable. Also as this includes a DNS change depending on your Internet Service Provider it might take between 24 to 48 hours to come back.

Is there anything I should do to prepare for this?

Any last minute scheduling of shows should be performed this evening before midnight for the next 24 to 48 hours if you have not already.

The server maintenance has been completed successfully. Final testing is still occurring but everything is back online.

HI Daniel

My SKIPPA is making contact with the IceTV servers as expected. However, none of my Toppys have done so since 12.14 am. I have tried rebooting them but so far no success. It may well be a peculiarity of the Topfield firmware that is causing this to happen (or not happen may be a better way to say it).

Hi
Since your update my units now say my account details are invalid.  Is this normal or is it caused by something else?
Cheers

It might help to say what kind of "units" they are.

Our Beyonwiz T4 is fetching normally from IceTV.

However, both the EPG fetch and the timer update is failing on our Beyonwiz DP-Lite and DP-P2. When I check the IceTV connection with the IceTV Check User Info on the two DP series boxes, it returns "Authentication Failed". My "My Account" page shows the "Last EPG fetch" for the DP devices was at 11:23pm last night, 22 Oct.

I tried re-entering my IceTV password on the DP-Lite. That didn't help.

Other network functions on the devices, like NTP time update, are working normally.

Is there anything else I should check or try doing?

None of my PVRs is able to connect to IceTV since last night.
Beyonwizes give same message as prl and Toppy says invalid account.
ISP is Bigpond if that matters.
Didn't this happen last time there was a server change?

The units are both Topfields.  I consider it as irrelevant as the issue is that my login details are no longer accepted.

I think it's relevant because it seems that some devices are working after the upgrade and some aren't.

It's beginning to look like the difference is that devices using the old servers are getting these authentication errors, and devices like the Beyonwiz T series that use the new servers are working.

Knowing what the device is helps build a picture of the problem.

The type of device is relevant. New devices use a different IceTV API; thus the SKIPPA and Beyonwiz T3 and T4 (possibly all the T-series) are working OK.

All Topfield PVRs, even the new TRF-5300 series use the old IceTV API.

Both 2400 Toppies - not fetching

PC Widget works OK - fetching

iPhone and iPad working OK - fetching

I called IceTV support. The 1300 number gave me "The number you have dialed is not in service". The 02 number put me through to voicemail. I left a message and my phone number.

Different PVR brands and models each use a different server address to connect to IceTV. The Topfield PVRs use one address, the old Beyonwiz PVRs use another address, the new T series Beyonwiz PVRs use a different server address the old Beyonwiz PVRs, etc. So each recorder brand or model type's specific server address needs to be updated in all DNS servers worldwide (or at least Australia wide).

It can take 24 to 48 hours for the changed IP addresses to filter through the Internet to all DNS servers worldwide.

As per the scheduled maintenance message (http://forum.icetv.com.au/iceforum/announcements/4/icetv-scheduled-maintenance-tonight-22102015/4686/msg24007#msg24007) at the top of this thread:
.
There are 2 stages to moving to new servers:
It takes 24 to 48 hours for a changed IP address to filter through the Internet to all DNS servers worldwide. Some ISPs take longer than others to update their "address book".

What is a DNS Server?

A DNS server is like a phone book for web servers. Every ISP has their own DNS servers and they have many different DNS servers in each city. The numerical IP address of the IceTV servers has now changed, and many ISP's DNS servers are still pointing to the old server addresses. As each server learns of the new address, it later passes that new address onto the next server and within 48 hours they will have all been updated.

I've got a Topfield 7100 & EyeTV 3.6.8, and am unable able to connect to the IceGuide Server.

The TopField gives me the error: Invalid User Account.
The EyeTV simply reports: Update failed due to a server error.

Is this likely to just be a DNS issue ?

I pointed my ADSL modem's DNS entries to Google 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4, but that didn't fix the lack of connectivity.

Yes I would say that it is. The Toppy has its own settings for DNS which may differ from those of the router.

On my Toppys the default and secondary DNS are 164.124.101.2 and 211.232.190.1, whereas the Cable Modem uses Telstra DNS 61.9.133.193 and 61.9.134.49. My recollection is that one or both of the DNS listed for the Toppy are located in Korea. Just checked they are both in Korea.

Humax PVRs freezing and Topfield PVRs rebooting

If anybody's Topfield or Humax is misbehaving at the moment (because it cannot find the IceTV server) try unplugging the network cable or the USB WiFi dongle until Sunday, by which time all ISP's DNS servers will know where to find the IceTV servers.

Do NOT set a Humax to use the Humax EPG Type or you will lose all of your Humax's series recordings in your account when it next connects to IceTV. The existing guide data and schedules on the Humax will reappear once it has been disconnected from your network.

OK. I know I am slow...  I have two computers (on the same network)  The laptop, which is what I am writing on ATM, is (as you can see) connecting to IceTV's website fine.  My desktop, which is the computer that WMC is connected to, can't even open IceTV's website, or  this Forum - nothing.  All pages just time out.
Is this connected with the DNS server?  I just don't understand how one computer (obviously same ISP) is OK the other isn't.  I even tried rebooting, after which the IceTV  Interactive opened, but it says there is no internet connection.
Incidentally, I have no problems connecting to any other site.
So, its this connected to the scheduled maintenance, or am I having another problem?
I am most unhappy - missed recording my soap :-)

Hi Judy,

Yes, it would be due to the scheduled maintenance.

But it is interesting, to me, that the PC with Media Center cannot even open the IceTV website. Try opening the browser and go to what should be the IceTV website. Then press CTRL and F5 together.

Maybe you have manually configured the DNS server addresses on the PC that can connect so it has a different DNS server address to the PC that cannot connect - or vice versa.

I'm not at all convinced that it's a DNS issue.

This is what my DNS returns (on my Mac) for api.icetv.com.au, the DNS address used by the T4's IceTV plugin (which works):

Cambyses:python prl$ nslookup api.icetv.com.au
Server:         192.168.178.1
Address:        192.168.178.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
api.icetv.com.au        canonical name = icetv.com.au.
Name:   icetv.com.au
Address: 54.206.1.164
Name:   icetv.com.au
Address: 54.206.94.20

Cambyses:python prl$

And this is what it returns for the two DNS addresses that I found by looking for IP addresses in the DP series firmware program wizpimp, remote-beyonwiz.icetv.com.au and www.icetv.com.au:
Cambyses:python prl$ nslookup remote-beyonwiz.icetv.com.au
Server:         192.168.178.1
Address:        192.168.178.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
remote-beyonwiz.icetv.com.au    canonical name = icetv.com.au.
Name:   icetv.com.au
Address: 54.206.94.20
Name:   icetv.com.au
Address: 54.206.1.164

Cambyses:python prl$ nslookup www.icetv.com.au
Server:         192.168.178.1
Address:        192.168.178.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
www.icetv.com.au        canonical name = icetv.com.au.
Name:   icetv.com.au
Address: 54.206.94.20
Name:   icetv.com.au
Address: 54.206.1.164

Cambyses:python

Always exactly the same pair of addresses, 54.206.94.20 and 54.206.1.164.

The DPs use the same DNS server address as my Mac, my router 192.168.178.1. The router that supplies all the devices, Mac, DP-Lite, DP-P2 and T4 with their DSN server address via DHCP.

In case it hasn't registered yet the xml guide is now unavailable. If you enter this url http://iceguide.icetv.com.au/cgi-bin/epg/iceguide.cgi?op=xmlguide into your web browser then it pops up with username and password fields but does not accept valid login details. It looks more like an authentication issue than a DNS issue to me. However I guess I could wait up to 48 hours for it to resolve itself, although I would prefer to be able to access the Ice Guide sooner than that!

I just tried CTRL F5 and I also cleared the cache - no change.  How do I look up the DNS server address?  I don't remember ever touching it, unless someone gave me step-by-step instructions for one reason or other.  I certainly wouldn't know how to manually configure it :-)

I got the email advising of "scheduled maintenance", took advice and did a fetch on both my Macs (Elgato EyeTV Diversity) last night.
This morning neither Mac could contact server. No problem, as I was advised it could take 48 hours for DNS to be applied. I am checking forums regularly now and just saw the post from Daniel.
So I went to both Macs and did an update on each successfully. All seems to be back to normal.
What I am really wanting to know is when should I re-enable auto renew on my subscription?
I disabled this when all this "voluntary administration' came to my attention.
I got an email on Wednesday alerting me that my subscription was about to expire, but was still sceptical as to whether the charge would be paid to the old or resurrected IceTV.
Should I wait until advised of new payment gateway up and running or enable now?
I have read the bit about having a week to decide whether I want to subscribe, but I already know that I do, and don't want to lose any of my saved schedules if my subscription expires.
And one thing I did notice over this week was that there were no time changes reflected in "My Week". usually I would expect 1 or 2 changes to the schedule but none were showing. I can understand if this is because of the transitional changes but hope that it is not indicative of how the service will be run from now on. After all, the best thing of this service is to keep devices up to date on recording schedules.

I'm not sure about the newer Toppys but my old 2400hdt did reuire a complete reset and set up if a resend of schedules was requested.

Try "c:\windows\system32\ipconfig /flushdns"

Very weird.  When I open cmd, it opens c:\windows\system32>  Initially, I just typed ipconfig /flushdns after that. Didn't like that.  This time I went back to the c prompt, and typed the whole line (replacing the > after system32 with \) and it worked!

However, that didn't solve the problem, I'm afraid.  I have no idea what to do next.  I have no problem on the laptop, but IceTV Interactive is installed on the desktop and it can't open the webpage, which of course is the reason no recordings are happening  there.

I tried everything, cleared all the cache, tried from both FF and IE, even tried (at someone's suggestion) 54.206.94.20

The type of unit was irrelevant.  I asked if the account showing invalid was a symptom of the upgrade.  IceTV could have just said yes.  It has now self rectified.  As I have just blown 3 years prepaid IceTV may like to put out more in depth information for customers in their emails if they want to get them back.

The information contained in Reply 13 of this thread seems pretty comprehensive to me - and stated that the problem would resolve within a timeframe. Other posts indicate why the type of device could be significant.

Once the new company gets fully operational in about a week it will provide the same quality EPG data and the same great customer service that you all became used to from the old company, for $7.99 per month (which is about $95 over a year if you subscribed to IceTV each month for 12 months).

  • All customers will receive an email notifying them that they are now able renew their subscriptions (manually or by enabling auto renew).

This appears to be set up on the IceTV server now, but I haven't seen an announcement anywhere or got an email about it. Is it ready to go? I'm going to have uncertain Internet access from next week for about 3 weeks, so I'd like to get things set up before then.

Hi Guys,

While there have been some incremental changes to the website (and there are still more the come over the next week or so) they new payment gateway is likely to be online sometime next week at this stage (no exact date as yet). An email will definitely be sent out once it is ready and we can start taking orders again.
