Fake refund email from "iiNet"
« on: September 10, 2016, 09:33:34 AM »
I got an email this morning purporting to be from iiNet and telling me that I was due a refund of one month's bills because I'd been inadvertently charged twice, and I could claim it by clicking on to "Login To My Account" in the email.

The indications that it is fake are:
  • The monthly "bill" amount was a lot more than what I actually pay.
  • That's not how iiNet would manage a refund.
  • The actual link under "Login To My Account" was obviously not to iiNet.
  • The grammar and wording wasn't quite what I'd expect from native English speakers.
  • There were a superficially likely-looking set of Received entries near the start of the post headers, but the actual delivery path was revealed further down in the headers.
I'm happy to forward the email to anyone in iiNet if they want to have a proper look at it.

Hi prl,

Spam emails involving iinet can be sent to abuse@iinet.net.au.

Thanks. That's not exactly well-advertised on iiNet's Web pages.

Searching for "spam" on either Technical Support or the Sales FAQs on the Web pages returns just one match, Updating the firmware on your Topfield TRF-53x0, 2460, 2400 or TF7100HDPlus, which, curiously, doesn't contain the string "spam" at all.

Are we perhaps confusing iceTV and iiNet?
